A Margate officer hit and killed a pedestrian yesterday while responding to a 911 call reporting a possible drunk driver. The accident occurred on state road 7 in a dimly-lit area of the 6-lane road.

Officer Roman Fayer, 25, was driving southbound on State Road 7 when he struck Alan Thomas Byrne, who was not in a crosswalk, according to Margate police Lt. Andy Zettek.

Byrne died at the scene of the accident. Fayer was to taken Northwest Regional Medical Center where he was treated for minor lacerations from shattered glass and was released, Zettek said.

A driver called 911 to report erratic driving after almost being hit by another car. The caller followed the suspected drunk driver while still on the phone with 911. Fayer was in communication with the 911 dispatcher and was trying to locate the impared driver.
