In an unfortunate auto accident last night, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a Miami police officer driving his police car through Homestead, resulting in the closing of the intersection for several hours pending an investigation of the scene. The accident occurred at the intersection of NE 16th Ave. and 8th Street around 11:00 p.m. The Miami Herald is reporting this morning that friends of the victim have identified the man hit in the accident as 25 year old Jose Godinez.

Friends also say that Jose Godinez was leaving a neighborhood bar when the accident happened. The investigation into the matter has not revealed any details about the cause of this accident, but this accident may highlight the need for more pedestrian-friendly design of our streets and neighborhoods, and might also result in a call to the responsibility of owners and operators of bars to ensure the safety of their patrons who have consumed alcohol. Our thoughts and sentiments go out to both the Miami-Dade police officer and the family and friends of Jose Godinez today.
